Nike is paying tribute to the legendary American track-and-field team, Athletics West, by releasing an interactive graphic story on its website. The sportswear brand commissioned San Francisco-based agency AKQA to develop the visual part of the vibrant project, which is now hosted on the Nike’s homepage.

In the late 70-ies, the US was on the very first stages of development in the athletics area if compared to Europe, and it was time to put an end to this. In 1977, Bill Bowerman, Phill Knight (co-founders of Blue Ribbon Sports, which later became Nike) and Geoff Holister formed a team of promising runners by uniting the Defiant Dozen plus Craig Virgin, who managed to prove that the USA can really beat the Old World on the track. The athletes started from the scratch and by hard and exhausting trainings paved their road to championships—each member of the team became the best in his category, brining gold medals to the country. “They broke rules, they broke rules, they broke limits”—they led America to success on the global athletics ground.

The new graphics highlight the story of their struggle for victory. They did not only contribute to the US sport heritage, but also were among the first people who made sport apparel part of their casual wardrobe. By clicking on items on the page, visitors can watch the whole epic (or read it on Wikipedia), see the trailer and check news related to the Athletics West theme on the Nike website.
