understanding shakespeare is a project by designer stephan thiel that explores the data in the works of william shakespeare. theil explains that the goal of the project was ‘to introduce a new form of reading drama to help understand shakespeare’s works in new and insightful ways and to address our changed habits of consuming narrative works and knowledge through the capabilities of information visualization.’ using data from these texts, theil developed a series of was to represent the works visually. he developed five approaches that represented each work using algorithms, including visualizing the dramatic structure, summarizing each speech and one that showed the importance of the text based on google search results. these visualizations were included in a book of the project and executed as full size prints. all the visualizations are included on the project website.
